H. O. Rawson was a noted Western artist who made pen and ink drawings from either photographs or real life. From 1900 through the 1930s he went about making drawings of as many important personalities of the American West as he could. He self published these drawings as cards and distributed them for sale. William Clarke Quantrill was born in Canal Dover, Ohio in 1837. He came to Kansas as a young man, and taught school for a while before he became active in the border wars, between free state and pro-slavery forces in the fight for Kansas statehood. He fought on the Confederate side during the Civil War, participating in guerrilla warfare.
